Radical Masters/ Radical UK Cup - Imola

Competitors in the Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters, and Dunlop Radical UK Cup were rewarded with two thrilling races at Imola, Italy this weekend, as both series move into the latter half of the season. The fast-paced races, held alongside the Le Mans Series weekend, rewarded Race Team Solutions’ Per Staff Jnr, and the Radical UK Works Team pairing of Shaun Balfe/Roger Bromiley with a win apiece.

Race 1

Local driver Ronnie Valori placed his SR8 on pole for Race 1, with Staaf Jnr alongside on the front row, Valori setting the fastest time by nearly two seconds on the 3.1-mile lap.

On the second row, Slim Racing’s Christian Kronegard lined up next to Jaap Bartels, with the fastest Supersports Class qualifier, Barnardo Pellegrini, in 15th position, and Michele Esposito’s rapid SR4 the fastest Invitation class runner ahead in 13th.

Staaf took the lead on the very first lap, a lead that he retained all the way to the chequered flag by a margin of 32.4 seconds from Allos, promoted to second after the exclusion of Benjamin Bailly/Al Faisal. Allos battled all the way up from 18th on the grid to a podium finish, after a late ‘off’ by Terrence Woodward unfortunately dropped his 360 Racing SR8 to seventh, cruelly denying him and Ross Kaiser the second-place position they had held for much of the race. As a result, the Works team pairing of Roger Bromiley and Shaun Balfe took third.

Just behind them finished the highest-placed Supersports runner, the SR3 RS of UK Racing’s Pellegrini, capitalising on his class pole and resisting the challenges of Mark Electrical’s Mark Smithson/Stuart Moseley, and David Thorburn/Rob Wheldon from the Radical UK Works Team. Even more impressively, Autosport Sorrento’s diminutive SR4 of Luigi Bruccoleri/Michele Esposito was holding its own, the pairing surprising even some established SR8 runners with the car’s pace and manoeuvrability.

Race 2

Qualification for the second race was held on a wet track, leading to slower times than during Q1.

However, Staaf took the pole position, his best time of 1:58.243 only seven-tenths faster than Alex Mortimer, also on the front row. F2 ace Bailly took third spot on the grid, with European F3 Open hotshot William Vermont alongside in fourth. Experienced Radical racer Stuart Moseley was the fastest Supersports Class driver, by less than six-tenths from Alex Kapadia.

The 41-strong field enjoyed considerably hotter conditions for Race 2 however, held late in the day on Saturday. Mortimer jumped Staaf on the start to take the lead all the way to the mandatory pit stops, with Staaf dropping to seventh on lap 2, Vermont and subsequently Kaiser taking up the chase for pole. Woodward/Kaiser were able to leapfrog Mortimer in the pit stops and lead until the penultimate lap; once again there was heartache however; Woodward passed by both Balfe/Bromiley (up from seventh) and Speed Factory’s Thomas Meidinger/Giorgio Rosa (up from tenth) on the final lap. At the flag, Bromiley was 11.4 seconds ahead of Rosa, with Woodward third and Mortimer’s co-driver Chris Hyman fourth.

In the Supersports Class, Moseley and Smithson made up two places whilst retaining the class lead from lights-to-flag, despite sustained pressure from Thorburn/Wheldon and the ever-improving 360 Racing duo of Tony Wells/James Littlejohn. Less than 24 seconds split the three after 40 minutes of racing, Esposito and Bruccoleri the fastest Invitation Class finishers close behind, and 14th overall.

Competitors in the Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters now have a well-earned break before the penultimate round of the season, held at Estoril on the 24/25 September. There’s less time to wait for Dunlop UK Cup teams however; the next round taking place on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in less than a fortnight’s time.
