MOMO to Sponsor Alexis van de Poele

Racing with ANSA Motorsports in IMSA Lites at Sebring

Sportscar fans love a dynasty – Whether it’s the Andrettis, the Dysons, the Brundles or any number of other star studded families.

It was a particularly pleasant surprise though to receive a press release about a young Belgian racing hopeful this week, and even more of a surprise to get a note from his dad explaining that young Alexis van de Poele has benefited more from his own levels of preparation and persuasion and the preparedness of a team to take a chance on a new talent than from his surname.

Alexis will make his American racing debut in the season-opening 2013 IMSA Lites L1 class at Sebring International Raceway, the race part of the support package for the 12 hours on March 14-15, he’ll be driving the #41 MOMO-sponsored ANSA Motorsports IMSA Lites L1 Elan prototype racer.

“It will be my first ever race out of Europe, and to have it take place in the U.S.A., where motorsports is a religion, at such a mythical race track and at such a famous event as the 12 Hours of Sebring, makes it really exciting!” said the 23-year-old college student.

While he has never competed on the historical road course, he is very familiar with the track, dad Eric, is a former two-time winner at Sebring.

“I’m incredibly happy to know my son will taste a bit of world racing history with this experience on one of the most famous race tracks in the world,” Eric said. “I’m particularly proud he will carry the famous MOMO colors for this race.”

“My father has had a lot of success in the past at Sebring, and has told me so much about the track, so I can’t wait to race there,” Alexis added. “I have never been to Sebring, but with my 23 years of related experience and passion for motorsports, I can say that I have virtually travelled a few times around the track already. I have been told that Sebring International Raceway is the most challenging track for the driver and car,” he added.

The opportunity to drive for the ANSA Motorsports team came through his father’s friendship with Alain Nadal, owner of the Miami-based boutique dealership and racing operation, and a former teammate on several occasions.

“Alexis is a very talented driver and IMSA Lites is a good stepping stone to prototype racing. I am sure he will do well at this stage,” Nadal said. “I promised him that one day I would give him the chance to prove that he is faster than his famous dad. This is his opportunity.”

“I have to thank Alain and the whole ANSA Motorsports team for giving me this opportunity to race at Sebring, which is a huge one for a young racing driver like me,” Alexis said.

The young Belgian scored two victories and a third at Spa Francorchamps last season in Europe. In 2011, he recorded two wins at Spa and two more in the Belgian Zolder Masters series and was the S2 Belgian champion.

When not racing, Alexis is studying economics, management and marketing, which he relates to racing.

“Motorsports is more than a sport; it is a school of life. It has taught me much that will help me in my everyday life. The sport takes a man to his limits. The concentration, the challenge, the development, the teamwork, the fact that you can always do better, go faster,” he related.

And, as any racer will tell you, support is essential. “It is a great honor to race under the banner of MOMO, which is a mythical name in motorsports. I will concentrate on continuing the success, image and spirit of the make on the racetrack,” he noted.

Van de Poele will be driving a Mazda-powered prototype in the IMSA Lites 1 class that will compete in two races, a 30-minute sprint Thursday (March 14) afternoon and again the next day in a 45-minute event. Qualifying will be held Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
