GT Open Winter Series, Jerez - Weekend Report
MTECH And AF Corse Win In Spain

Round 2 of the GT Open Winter Series brought the teams to Spain this weekend. At the Jerez circuit 11 cars were entered, 10 down compared to the entry for the opening round at Paul Ricard two weeks ago. MTECH Racing and AF Corse secured a win each in the two races.

MTECH was fastest in the first and third practice session on Friday, with Kessel Racing setting the fastest time in the second session. Track action resumed on Saturday morning with another two free practice sessions. After SMP Racing-Russian Bears set the fastest time in the penultimate session it was the AF Corse Ferrari 458 of Talkanitsa Sr and Jr which was fastest in the final session, its 1:41.647 the fastest time of all practice sessions combined.

In the first qualifying session the Talkanitsa Ferrari beat the Kessel Racing Ferrari by three tenths of a second, with the AF Corse Ferrari of Claudio Sdanewitsch claiming third. MTECH Racing was fastest in qualifying 2, Matt Griffin beating Talkanitsa by nine tenths of a second.

Alexander Talkanitsa Sr started from pole position in race 1 and maintained his lead for the first couple of laps. Unfortunately the Belarussian driver suffered a puncture on lap 5 and he spun off into the gravel trap. Talkanitsa’s misfortune allowed the SMP Racing-Russian Bears Ferrari to take the lead. The #67 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 held onto the lead until the pit stops. After the pit stops Kessel Racing and MTECH Racing started to close in and Roman Mavlanov was unable to keep the Super GT cars behind him. As Mavlanov and Broniszewski fought for the lead it was Matt Griffin who had the last laugh as he passed his rivals to take victory in race 1.

After a strong performance in race 1 Roman Mavlanov was unlucky at the start of race 2. The Ferrari driver spun on the straight at the start, but managed to continue without damage. Pole sitter Griffin held Broniszewski and Talkanitsa Jr behind him and handed over to Duncan Cameron during the pit stops. Talkanitsa Sr closed in on Cameron and on lap 24 the AF Corse Ferrari passed the MTECH Racing Ferrari to take the lead. Unfortunately for Duncan Cameron his race ended two laps later after suffering a puncture. Talkanitsa continued to take his second race win of the Winter Series. Team Ukraine (Ferrari) finished second and Michael Broniszewski took third.

The next event before the start of the International GT Open season will take place at the Barcelona circuit. A two-day test session is set to take place on March 14 and 15.
