Conversations At The NEC

David Brabham was present at the Thursday Rolex 24 Press Conference and was actively looking for an opportunity for a run at the 51st running of the race, but he’s looking too for a 2013 season deal:

“I have nothing confirmed just yet [no comment from Brabs on whether or not JRM will return to the WEC just yet] but I’m particularly keen to see whether there might be an opportunity for me to race either in an LMP2 or a GTE.  They are two class wins at Le Mans that I’d be particularly happy to get, it adds something special to a career that has seen multiple class wins in multiple major events.”

Brabham has of course posted race wins in both LMP1 and in GT1 in years past at Le Mans.

Warren Hughes and Thomas Erdos were both cruising the halls and both were upbeat, Warren reporting “some interesting conversations but nothing done yet,” for 2013 whilst Tommy was “still pursuing some interesting TV work, “ and “might well have some good news about a return to the GT ranks pretty soon.”

Michael Caine confirmed that it was “very unlikely I’ll be back in British GT this year. Daniele (Perfetti) has won it now so that’s ‘mission accomplished’. In some ways it’s a shame because the Championship looks brilliant but I’m probably ready for something different."

The Bentley GT3 car that was sitting on the main stage was, on closer inspection, a neatly adapted road car; the first race car being some way from the track yet as the design and development team assembles at Msport’s Cumbrian base. Malcolm Wilson was very much in evidence at the NEC, as well as team manager John Wickham and lead designer Graham Humphries.  DSC believes design is well underway with weight reduction of course a major aim of the programme. In part that’s a simple process - the car needs to be converted from its standard 4WD format to RWD and a huge amount of weight can be saved simply by stripping out the luxury based fixtures and fittings from the Continental GT. A fully assembled door for instance weighs c. 57 kg, and the drivers and passengers seats are around the same weight each too!
