FIA GT Silverstone - FIA GT3 Qualifying

Saturday at Silverstone and bright sunshine welcomed the 81 GT cars here and due to race (26 x FIA GT, 37 x FIA GT3 and 18 x FIA GT4)

First Qualifying Session

First GT track action of the day was the first FIA GT3 Qualifying session and it was the new Audi R8 LMS that initially looked like the pacesetter.

Christopher Mies (#26 Phoenix Racing) and Nicolas Armindo (#32 Team Rosberg) duked it out for bragging rights in the first half of the session before being bettered by Thomas Accary in the #3 Hexis Racing Aston Martin DBRS9, 1:51.404 edging out Armindo’s time by just 0.019 of a second.

The Morgans were late on parade but that didn’t stop Dimitri Enjalbert from storming round on only his second flying lap to set pole in the #100 Aero Super Sport, 1:51.098 a mark that nobody really challenged.  Gael Lesoudier in the #101 Morgan meanwhile set sixth fastest time, just shy of the mark set by the top Ford GT of the session, this the #28 Fischer racing car of Christoffer Nygaard

The remainder of the top ten qualifying positions were filled by the pair of Kessel Racing Ferrari 430 Scuderias, (Bonafacio’s #7 car ahead of Palma’s #8 machine) then the #17 Marc Sourd Racing Corvette of Luca Pirri and a third Audi R8 LMS (#33 Team Rosberg) with Martin Matzke at the whee1.

Bradley Ellis had the glorious sounding Apex Jaguar in the top ten for much of the session but finished the session in 11th.

James Gornall ended the session 13th after traffic trouble in the #10 Brixia Aston Martin with Chris Niarchos 21st in the #55 CRS Ferrari and David Ashburn 24th in the #22 Trackspeed Porsche.

Second FIA GT3 Qualifying Session

It would be a double Morgan pole, young Maxime Martin in the #101 car (son of Belgian racer Jean- Michel Martin and 2008 French Clio Cup Champ) edging out Sean Edwards in the #19 Muhlner Porsche 997.

Diego Alessi in the #17 Corvette ended the session in third spot ahead of the pair of Matech Fords. Dino Lunardi in the #2 car heading Thomas Mutsch’s #1.

Makiowiecki’s #4 Aston, Tim Bergmeister’s #18 Porsche, Johan-Boris Schier’s #100 Morgan , Stefano Gattuso’s #8 Ferrari and Sascha Bert’s #36 Zakspeed Viper rounded out the top ten.

Amongst the rest Phil Quaife , Tim Sugden and Chris Goodwin covered places 13-15 and Wolfgang Kaufmann put his Corvette in 18th.

The two GT3 races this weekend look set to be fast and furious stuff.
