Zytek Join Lola And Oreca In Cost-Capped Marketplace

Taking absolutely nothing away from the excellent form shown so far this weekend by the Greaves Motorsport Zytek Nissan there were eyebrows raised over the relative performance of the #41 car to the other ‘grandfathered’ LMP2s.

The simple answer to that question is that the car is not running to the same spec as the pair of HPDs or the RLR Msport MG Lola, both of which are running with smaller restrictors and 20 kilos more weight than their cost capped competition.  Instead the Zytek is racing as a fully cost-capped car.

Tim Greaves explained this morning that:  “There is nothing to stop others doing what we have done.  The fact is that Zytek will be happy to take orders for a car identical to this one at the regulated cost-capped level.  Indeed I believe that there might already have been enquiries about that.”

Our interpretation of that is that the regulations permit a manufacturer to duplicate a current 2010 design within the 2011 regulations as long as they are prepared to do so within the regulated cost-cap . 

DSC also believes that one avenue currently under discussion elsewhere in the paddock is that the current HPD runners are pressing their suppliers to take a similar look at the rulebook as they investigate every avenue of levelling the playing field in LMP2.
