FIA GT1, Beijing - Qualifying Report

Seventeen cars rolled out onto the Beijing Goldeport circuit for the first part of qualifying this afternoon. After a heavy shunt in practice the nr 20 Sumo Power GT Nissan GT-R was not ready for qualifying and will start the Qualifying Race at the back of the grid.

In Q1 Marc Basseng in the nr 38 All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport Lamborghini Murcielago was the quickest driver with 15 minutes left in the session. Unfortunately for Basseng and all the other drivers the session was interrupted when Lucas Luhr went off into the gravel at turn 1. Luhr was unable to get out of the gravel on his own and the red flag was shown. With the German receiving assistance to get back on the track his qualifying session was over and the championship leader will start from the back of the grid.

At 4 pm the green flag was shown again and the cars returned to the track for the remaining 12 minutes of Q1. Several drivers managed to improve Basseng’s time but just after Stefan Mücke had set the fastest lap time in the Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DBR9 in first position the red flag came out again when Stef Dusseldorp dug his Hexis AMR Aston Martin deep into the gravel trap. The session was restarted, but Mücke’s time was not improved.

In Q2 the fastest time was improved several times in the first couple of minutes, with the Fords, Lamborghini’s and the Young Driver AMR Astons swapping positions. In the end it was Bas Leinders posting the fastest time in Q2, with the two Young Driver AMR. The nr 22 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R as well as the nr 37 All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport Lamborghini did not make it through to the third part of qualifying.

At 10.48, three minutes after the scheduled end of qualifying, Q3 got underway and it was Tomas Enge who put in several fast laps. Five minutes into the session the nr 7 Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DBR9 was still the fastest car but just after Enge improved his fastest time once again the nr 41 Marc VDS Racing Team Ford GT of Maxime Martin went even quicker and took provisional pole position for tomorrow’s Qualifying Race. That provisional pole position was converted into a real pole position when Martin’s teammate Marc Hennerici spun his Ford GT into the wall at the final corner, bringing out the red flag once again and ending the session.

Young Driver AMR will start from second and third on the grid, with the nr 38 All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport Lamborghini Murcielago starting from fourth.
