TOTAL Spa 24 Hours - Hours 4, 5 & 6
First Safety Car

Hour 4

The No. 33 Jetalliance Aston makes a regular stop and Simonsen drops to sixth with Pier Guidi inheriting third place. Then both of the leaders stop almost simultaneously. Lichtner-Hoyer takes over the No. 33 Aston and Fabrizio Gollin double-stinting in the No. 6 Corvette. The No. 2 Maserati also stops and Pier Guidi stays aboard. The No. 1 Maserati was the last to stop in this sequence and thus Stephane Sarrazin takes over the GT1 lead.

Further back, Dominik Kraihamer pulled off briefly at Raidillon with a wheel problem at the left rear. GT2 has become a Porsche 1-2 with two of the three 4.0-liter Porsches up front, Long over Collard. The fine running No. 77 Ferrari moves back into second in class when Long makes a short third stop.

The sequence of stops yielded a wonderful train of cars. Overall positions two through five went nose to tail for lap after lap, Pier Guidi ahead of Simonsen, ahead of Alzen, ahead of Sarrazin. For perhaps 10 minutes they continued with no quarter given by anyone. Then they began to encounter clumps of traffic. The slower cars were being negotiated by all quite well and it was only with a deft move around a Porsche that the order changed at the rear of the four-car train when Sarrazin picked past Alzen. A few laps later the Gigawave Aston of Simonsen tapped the No. 160 Porsche and the second placed G3 car was sent into a spin.

The No. 121 Ferrari has retired and is the only the second car to have withdrawn as we complete the third hour. The AS Events team has worked through three wheel bearings and felt that continuing constituted a safety issue. The No. 174 Sport Garage Ferrari, in addition to its puncture, has a glitch in the gearbox electrics and is skipping geras. The No. 115 G3 class Lamborghini also had a puncture, followed by a 20-minute had to repair a broken front splitter. This was followed by another puncture. Currently, the team is concerned that the fuel rig is not operating properly and that they may not be able to fill the tank.

The real reason for the penalty to the No. 102 PMB Porsche was nearly as ludicrous as our joke. The scrutineers determined that the bar code on the starting set of tires did match those of the set on which the car was to have started. It’s unclear whether the team erred or the officials, but this being the FIA, God is on their side.

The No. 8 Lamborghini lost time by having the wrong tires on at the wrong time while Mr. Rusinov was driving. The Ascari has lost lots of time with the heat shield rubbing against the left rear tire.

The hour ends with Armand Fumal spinning at Stavelot. The No. 106 Delahaye Racing Ferrari had been on a steady climb that had taken it to second in G3. However, the delay has left Jean-Francois Hemroulle second in class with the No. 123 Mühlner Motorsport Porsche Cup car. There was also another spin, a somewhat lurid backward run at the Bus Stop by David Ashburn in the now 9th in GT2 class No. 59 Trackspeed Porsche.

Hour 5

Stephane Lacroix-Wasover just took over the No. 175 Sport Garage Ferrari and spun and stopped at a particularly bad spot along the Les Combes chicane section. The PMB Porsche has been pulled into the garage with a dangling rear splitter and some wiring issues in the left front headlight assembly. The No. 4 PekaRacing Corvette has a loose hood—Corvettes don’t have bonnets.

The rain begins to pick up as we pass 20:00. We also have slow Porsche, as Andre Alain Corbel is unable to get the No. 140 Emeraude Racing G3 entry up to speed after leaving the pits. He comes to a stop on the run up to Kemmel. Alexandros Margaritis steps into the No. 5 Corvette and promptly executes a lurid long spin the next time past the pits.

The Vertigo is in the garage, leaving both G2 cars stationary. Richard Westbrook is only now taking his first stint in the No. 61 Prospeed Porsche, currently third in GT2. The top four in that class are quite close. Long has a half-minute in hand over Ruberti with Westbrook a quarter-minute further back, with Bruni’s No. 50 Ferrari very close in fourth.

Margaritas has recovered nicely, now the fastest on the course and up to second place—thanks in part to the stops of other leaders. The rain has eased a bit, but it’s getting darker of course.

The No. 5 Phoenix Corvette moves up another spot into the lead Mike Hezemans makes a scheduled stop in the No. 6 Carsport Chevy.

The G3 race has hotted up considerably in the cool evening. Hemroulle holds a slim 11-second lead over the No. 112 Ferrari. However, the class leading No. 123 Porsche has been running faster laps of late.

The GT2 story surrounds the better fuel efficiency of the 4.0-liter Porsches. They have one stop less then the Ferraris. The No. 77 F430 does remain the class leader thanks to the BMS team’s flawless run thus far.

We have drama in the overall fight right on the hour mark as Mike Hezemans hunts down and passes Alexandre Negrao for second place. It is now a Corvette 1-2, with only 17 seconds between them.

Kurt Mollekens:

“It’s going OK but it could be a lot better.  We’re OK as long as the weather stays like this.  In the dry we are 2.5 – 3 seconds a lap slower than the other GT1s, in this weather we can close the gap because we know this place and many of the visitors don’t understand when to stay out and when to pit when the weather is changing.

“We lost 3 laps early on with a short circuit which tripped the master switch on the exit of the Bus Stop.  Luckily I could just reach the end of the pitlane.  Just now I had a lump of rubber thrown up from a Ferrari which knocked one of the fasteners off the front bonnet, we’ve fixed that just now.”

Jamie Davies:

“The conditions are really tricky but we’ve had no problems.  We went onto inters when the rain first came for about 15 minutes but other than that its been slicks all the way so far.”

Pat Long:

“I’ve spent a lot of my time not getting involved with the Italian mad men.  In fairness they are all going for the 6 hour points and of course we aren’t involved in that at all.

“We had a difficult start but have come back real well since then an we have an unusual strategy up our sleeves for later in the race.

“The main thing now is to keep it safe in the changing conditions, and to get to understand what those conditions mean.  It’s strange rain, your windshield gets really wet but the track isn’t a whole lot slower.  AF Corse reacted to the conditions once and got caught, you only do that once here!”

Allan Simonsen – after his first double stint,

“I really enjoyed the first stint, the car was great and I had a great battle to get right up there in the lead battle.

“The second set of tyres lasted 10 laps then went off quite quickly.  I got around one Porsche that was in trouble but got caught out by a second, that lost me a lot of time.”

Simonsen looked to be in some discomfort as he left the car, his eyes looked reddened and his overalls were covered in grit and debris, the Dane didn’t want to comment but is seems that the #10 Aston’s ventilation system is still not functioning properly.

Hour 6

The first half of the last hour of the first quarter of the 24 hours (did you follow that?) has been one of the most steady state periods thus far today. There seems to be a bit of setting up for a possible run to the 6-hour mark when the first set of points are awarded.

Hezemans continues to be the fastest on the circuit and has closed the gap to 4 seconds on the other Carsport Corvette of Margaritis. Much will depend on whether the leading No. 5 can make it to the hour before making its scheduled stop. The two Maseratis, Negrao (No. 2) ahead of Bertolini (No. 1), are very much waiting in the wings to make a move on the Corvettes, albeit from over a half-minute behind.

In GT2 Westbrook has just taken the lead after Ruberti made a stop. The Ferrari has, at the moment, two stops more than the Porsche, but the No. 61 Prospeed does owe a call soon. Raymond Narac (No. 76 Porsche) and the two AF Corse Ferraris are on the same lap, and only 20 and 40 seconds behind, respectively. Even Henzler in the other Prospeed RSR as well as the better of the CR Scuderia Ferraris (No. 56, Kirkaldy) are also on the lead lap—quite a crowd!

The G3 contest has spread for the first time in hours with the highly experienced Mühlner Motorsport team of No. 123 having over a minute in hand over the Jakubowski Ferrari. On the half-hour the overall strategy questions are answered when Margaritis stops and Hezemans takes over the lead. There are problems for the erstwhile leader as Margaritis returns to the track and spins at Les Combes. He appears to have damaged the car and is on a slow return when he grinds to a halt, on fire, at Blanchimont. Meanwhile Robert Hissom went off at Eau Rouge with the No. 175 Sport Garage Ferrari. The combination of these two events has prompted the first safety car intervention of the race.

Just before the neutralization the No. 61 Porsche stopped and handed the GT2 lead back to Ruberti. He and Malucelli have been doing all the driving thus far in No. 77. Also, Hezemans was called back in for a stop, leaving the Maseratis 1-2, Bertolini ahead of Negrao.

These positions, of course, will not hold across the 6-hour mark. Half points are awarded at 6 and 12-hour points so that the No. 1 team gets 5 points, No. 2 receives four, and No. 6 has three points credit.

The No. 5 Corvette has been loaded onto a flatbed truck. It becomes one of only a handful of retirements thus far.

Alex Margaritas:

“It was wet in the third sector and up through Eau Rouge but dry for a lot of the rest of the lap.  I was still on slicks so I was going quite carefully, but clearly I wasn’t slow enough through Eau Rouge and I spun and put the car into the barrier (nose first).

“I tried to bring the car back but was losing power as I came around.  I realised that there was a fire and stopped the car at Blanchimont.”
