British GT Oulton Park – Qualifying Report Session One The grid for today’s first race of the season was set after a closely contested 15 minutes which saw three cars take their turn at the top of the order with a further trio spending time in the top three. The order was finally topped by the #9 Momo Rollcentre Mosler, young Dan Brown setting pole (1:40.721) in his very first British GT race after a last minute effort stretched his advantage just enough to fend off the challenge from a charging David Jones in the #22 Preci Spark Ascari. Hector Lester had led the way early on but fell back in the order as others improved with fine runs from both Craig Wilkins (#20 ABG Viper) and Andrew Howard (#07 Beechdean Barwell Aston) overhauling the Ferrari, this pair ending the session third (Howard) and fourth (Wilkins) with the #3 Chad Ferrari, in the hands for this session of Chris Hyman demoting the UCB car to 6th in the dying moments of the session. GT4 saw a storybook pole position for the #52 Team WFR Ginetta of Jody Firth (1:48.847), back in the saddle after several seasons on the pitwall for Embassy Racing. The WFR car lead a Ginetta 1,2,3,4 ahead of the #53 Speedworx car of Richard Sykes which just pipped the #54 Rob Austin Racing G50 of Gary Simms with the #44 Stark Racing car of Ian Stinton a further half second back. Session 2 It was double poles for Momo Rollcentre and for Team WFR after another intriguing 15 minute session The #9 Rollcentre Mosler, Stuart Hall at the wheel, took the fight to Allan Simonsen’s #23 Ferrari which had led the session early on. A 1:40.414 pipped the Dane by just over a tenth of a second with Aaron Scott in the #20 ABG Viper third, three hundredths of a second ahead of the Vincent Vosse driven #72 Barwell Aston martin, Matt Griffin topping out the top five in the #21 Mtech Ferrari. GT4 saw Hunter Abbott return to the scene of his fiery accident last season in fine style, straight into the 1:47s in the #54 Rob Austin Racing Ginetta. He was though bettered by some four tenths by young Nigel Moore in the Team WFR car, a 1:47.072 was good enough for pole, the youngster then posting a string of sub 1:48 laps to bolster the point! Ian Stinton rounded out the top three in class in the #44 Stark Racing car ahead of Lawrence Tomlinson in the #53 Speedworx car. The #50 Beechdean Aston Martin N24 appeared under tow at the end of the session with evidence of contact with something solid on the left hand side of the car. The damage, visually at least, seemed fairly superficial. The #12 VRS Ferrari’s run of bad luck continued meanwhile, the car pitting after its out lap and not re-emerging for the remainder of the session (alternator failure) – Adam Wilcox will start tomorrow’s race from the back of the grid. |
