ALMS – Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport – Saturday Morning Report
Rain
© Gary Horrocks

Pretty much throw out the morning session here at Mosport. Just a few minutes into the session, rain hit, effectively washing out the session. (sorry) The winners were those who jumped out and nailed a fast lap early. Chief amongst those were the two Audis and Chris Dyson in the #20. This could be important as there is a strong chance that qualifying could also be washed out, making grid position based upon the times from today’s sessions. The times from Friday do not count as it was from an unofficial session.

Chris Dyson, who had a harmless spin in the session, said, “we knew the unsettled conditions were coming, so we thought we should try to get a quick lap in.”

The Penske Porsches continued to lap for most of the session, and the conditions caught Ryan Briscoe out. He ended up spinning and contacting the wall with the right side of the car. There was some light damage to the wing end plate, but the car continued without any serious damage.

Adrian Fernandez confirmed that both he and the car were OK after the crash yesterday. “I’m not sure what happened – the rear end came around on me, but everything is fine.” The car turned 21 laps in the session, but ended it stalled at the end of the front straight.

Ben Devlin, driving the BK Motorsport Mazda Lola indicated that things were going OK, considering the conditions. “We don’t get many opportunities to run in the wet, so we’re treating this as learning time for us.”

The Flying Lizards also entered the session with the intent of setting a fast one early. Johannes van Overbeek: “That was our plan from the beginning. Go set a fast one just in case qualifying is cancelled.”

Risi got caught out by the conditions, as they needed to bed in brakes for the race. Rick Meyer: “It was something that we needed to do at the time. Hopefully the conditions will improve and allow us to have a proper qualifying session. To start the race with some of the fast prototypes in the back of the grid could be a dangerous proposition.”

Both Jon and Clint Field of Intersport indicated that they may indeed be using a different car as soon as Petit. Stay tuned…

Noted on the timing and scoring screen – the GT2 Viper? No laps… no nothing.

The weather appears to be improving, just as the cars head out for the afternoon session.
