At about the 4:15-mark the No. 60 pole-sitting MSR entry has a massive tire failure out on the back stretch and crawls back around. John Dagys of motorsport.com noted that the now leading No. 9 Penske-Taylor car lost one lap with its problem at the start, but regained it by staying out during one of the yellows.

We’ve gone yellow again as the No. 7 Riley-BMW (Quentin Wahl) hits the wall at the horseshoe. Under yellow the No. 02 car (Salvador Duran) goes onto the grass in the infield, having to slow suddenly for a queue in front, and lost the nose of the Ganassi Riley. He’s taken the car directly into the prime garage space – five laps will be lost. The No. 11 Samax entry has retired with a blown engine. Milka Duno never drove.

The defending GT champions, No. 22 Alegra Porsche [albeit with a new chassis], is in with a bad transmission.

Jimmie Johnson tells the truth! Asked by your average NASCAR-type journo about the “many” lead changes, he said, “There really have been only about 4-5 lead changes, the rest just came from the cycling through being off-sequence as a result of the odd start.” Thank you for shedding some reality on this silliness!

The next green is a short one as a red Porsche makes contact with a Dippie and the GT car spins. There is a smattering of debris. Conditions are dry but very overcast as we’re well into darkness. The young Colin Braun continues to pace the field.

During the yellow there are problems for the No. 10 SunTrust Riley. Wayne Taylor left the pits and promptly came to a halt about 100 yards down the lane. The car won’t start and the crew has run out there to push him behind the wall.

Moments later the skies open. Moments later the track goes green. Moments later Ryan Hunter-Reay spins the silver No. 91 DP at the entrance to the infield. He manages to right matters with no harm. Terry Borcheller (No. 50 Brumos) had the lead at the green, but he was passed in anger through the infield by the Crawford-Porsche of Joey Hand—real racing that time—in the rain no less. Except that Borcheller has slowed and pitted—oh well. Vasser is some 22 seconds back in the No. 99 Riley-Pontiac. The No. 86 Farnbacher Loles car (Leh Keen) now leads GT, 8 seconds clear of Robert Doornbos in the No. 81 Synergy GT3 Cup.

Hand has stretched out a nice lead (38 seconds)—pleasant surprise for the Porsche fans. Crawford leads all the Riley – and Porsches, sort of, lead both classes.

Colin Braun then gets some of that gap back as the track dried and lap times shrink from two minutes down to 1:53 or 54.

Looking at the overall theme of the race at the six hour mark, the number of cars on the lead lap has hovered around nine or ten for the last three or four hours. That shrank to eight with Hunter-Reay’s recent delay, and Tracy Krohn losing a lap to Hand.

The eight are listed in the order at six hours, obviously. In the caution just before the rain (see above), the two Shank Rileys and the AJR Crawford actually got a lap back – and it must have been fine pit work from Job’s crew that had Hand out on wets in second – and then taking the lead.

Just after the hour, Doornbos in the second placed Synergy GT Porsche made contact with a DP and the #30 Mazda. Until that point, F-Loles, SpeedSource, Synergy, TRG and Banner machines filled the top five, followed by two more TRG cars, then the Stevensons Pontiac.

The McNish etc. SAMAX Riley has now had three delays: wheel nut, steering arm and a nose replacement. The Orbit Porsche has been behind the wall – and still is.
