ILMC/ALMS, Petit Le Mans - LMP2 Qualifying Diaz Saves the Best For Last For qualifying, the LMP2 class went out with the LMP1 cars, making for a bit of distracting session. Early fast time was set by Jean-Karl Vernay for Signatech Nissan, but his time was eclipsed by Christophe Bouchut for Level 5. These two swapped times back and forth, but class pole eventually went to Luis Diaz on the very last lap, taking the best time in class by .3 seconds. Ironically, just before qualifying for GT cars started, Luis was eating lunch and then decided he’d better check with the team to see if he was supposed to be qualifying. I guess the answer was yes. The P2 Oak entry was 4th in class, followed by a somewhat disappointing 5th in class result for United Autosports. Luis Diaz: "I was at lunch and knew Scott was down to qualify the car but thought I should go and check - It's good that I did because they wanted me instead - I have never run down that hill so fast! Scott was racing straight after qualifying so chose to step back. I got a clear lap and that made the difference to the time, we know how fast the Nissan is, beating them for pole is special." |
