Grand-Am, Rolex 24 At Daytona - Hours 4 to 6 As the fourth hour begins, the race goes green once more and we're now well and truly into the night phase of the race. Kenny Wallace, making his Rolex debut, is having an eye-opening experience; the NASCAR driver giving a very entertaining press conference after getting out of the #4 TRG Porsche; "There's debris all over the track and it's staying green! It's like a video game dodging them!" 18:40 The #7 Starworks Riley pulls off with flames apparent under the rear end. The fight for the lead between Bouchut and Justin Wilson in the #6 MSR Dallara stands at just half a second, but the Frenchman is not easily scared by anyone and is staying ahead. 18:45 Wilson is baulked by a GT Mazda in the infield and loses second to David Donohue. A Continental Tire representative tells John Hindhaugh that the #02 Riley (two punctures) was running lower tyre pressures than the #01 (no punctures). They were recommended to run at 22 pounds per square inch but ran at 18. Dario Franchitti also confirmed to him that the #02 had taken some camber off the wheels. Johannes van Overbeek has brought the much-delayed #45 Lizard Riley back into the race; now last in class and 19 laps down on Bouchut. Glynn Geddie and Ross Kaiser have completed their first stints in the race, but while the Bennett Ferrari seems to be on the mend, the #77 Doran Racing Dallara appears to have been in the pits for a lengthy stop and is dropping down the order. 18:58 11 cars are still on the lead lap, with Zak Brown in the #23 UA Riley currently 11th; some 35 seconds off the lead. In GT, Lietz has pitted, leaving Auberlen a lap clear of Patrick Pilet in the #54 Black Swan Porsche. 19:03 Bouchut pits, handing the lead to Donohue. Luis Diaz is in the #55. It transpires that Kaiser was another to spin at the Bus Stop, necessitating a new nose. 19:12 With 114 laps gone, the lead is still just half a second. One lap later and Briscoe has halved it. 19:19 Michael Valiante is the latest driver to experience a rear-right blow-out. The #60 Crown Royal MSR Riley is limping round NASCAR 3 and 4. 19:20 Donohue pits. Buddy Rice gets in. Briscoe now leads Borcheller by seven seconds, but both owe us a stop. Indeed, both pit straight away. 19:26 Paul Dalla Lana is in the #94 Turner BMW, which still leads GT. He holds a one lap lead over the second BMW - the M6 of PR1 Motorsports - while Rob Bell is now in third place in the Paul Miller Racing Porsche; meaning the lead GT Porsche is a 2009 car. As the fourth hour ends, the overall lead is held by Ricky Taylor in the #10 SunTrust Dallara; followed by Buddy Rice and Christian Fittipaldi in the two Action Express Racing Rileys. Jimmy Johnson is reporting brake issues. The #99 has gone into the garage for major work on the front right corner. Martin Brundle is back in the #23 United Autosports car and is on the lead lap in ninth. 19:35 FCY #5. Debris on the track. 19:41 Luis Diaz and Buddy Rice both pit. The #77 Doran Dallara is back in the race in the hands of Henri Richard, 16th in class and 27 laps off the lead. 19:47Green. Memo Rojas makes an inch-perfect move round the outside of T1 to take the #01 Riley into the lead for the second time. 19:48 Jon Fogarty brings the #99 Ganassi Riley back into the race, having lost eight laps. 19:51 Joerg Bergmeister unlaps himself from the leader, suggesting the Lizard repair has been successful. 19:53 FCY #6. Fluid on the infield. The #17 Porsche and #32 BMW have both had incidents here and appear to be the cause of the spill. With four and a half hours gone, the order is 5, 6, 55, 10, 9, 01, 23, 76, 90 and 02. In GT, we have 94 leading from 59, 48, 67, 69, 70, 22, 40, 54and 44. 20:07 Green. Great start for Ricky Taylor in the #10, who gains two places to third. 20:09 Lap 40 - Martin Brundle takes xith place at the expense of Rojas. 20:11 The #32 BMW gets turned around in the infield. Nick Ham in the #69 SpeedSource car tries to avoid but collects the BMW and also hits the #07 Camaro of Eric Curran at the same time. All three suffer significant damage, but the race stays green. This race really needs to settle down a bit. Rojas and Montoya both get past Brundle, and then Diaz and Fittipaldi, to go fourth and fifth. 20:16 The GT lead is about to change as Marc Lieb closes to a second of Dalla Lana in the #59 Brumos Porsche. Rob Bell is a further second back in the Paul Miller car. Lieb does indeed go by, but Dalla Lana manages to keep Bell behind him. Adam Christodoulou is in fifth in the #70 SpeedSource Mazda - now just a lap down after its earlier problems. The Flying Lizard repairs included a brake-pad change, which should mean that they can now run to the end. 20:28 Dalla Lana overshoots T1 and comes back to the pits. Lieb's lead over Bell now stands at eight seconds. 20:34 Montoya is now just half a second off Taylor in the fight for second. 20:37 Scott Mayer brings the #7 Starworks Riley back out after a lengthy repair. The car is currently 50 lpas off the lead. The #99 Bob Stallings Riley is back in the garage. 20:40 Lap 158. Brundle back into sixth after getting by Diaz. 20:42 Top two in GT pit. Lieb stays in but Bell hands over to Tim Sugden. The new GT leader, remarkably, is the #67 TRG Porsche of Andy Lally. 20:51 Buddy Rice pits and we now have a Ganassi one-two at the top of the timing screens. 20:52 Brundle pits the #23 from fourth, having reported a slow puncture in the rear right on his way in. he was due to pit anyway and Mark Patterson takes over without any dramas. 20:57 The #10 SunTrust Dallara is in the garage with the front end off. The car had just had a side-by-side contact with Montoya's Riley and the suspicion is that this is the reason. 21:03 Angelelli brings the #10 back out after the tracking is adjusted. The leaders in both classes have pitted. Joey Hand now leads in the #01, from Jamie McMurray in the #02. Marc Lieb has retaken the GT lead as the #67 drops to third. 21:08 FCY #7 after Jared Beyer finds the tyre wall (quite gently, as it happens) in the troubled #7 Starworks Riley. Of the 175 laps completed so far, 24 have been under caution. 21:18Green. Mark Patterson takes second from JC France at T2. 21:20 Pat Long passes Patterson as he seeks to reduce the #45's deficit to 16 laps. 21:24 Angelelli clips the right left of the #60 MSR Riley. 21:25 FCY #8. Mitchum Porsche parked up again on the infield. This race is really struggling to find a rhythm. The recovery of the Porsche is very leisurely and the first quarter of the race finishes at reduced pace. |
