Le Mans 24 Hours, Hour 2 We're expecting this Caution Period to be a long one - at least until 4:30 - The incident happened at 15:51. In the meantime the teams that stopped early have profitted from that move as several cars were caught in the pits. Big winners include the Covette Racing pair - now running 1,2 and Gavin is a Safety Car queue ahead. Third is Nick Tandy in the #88 Felbermayer carwith the Prospeed Porsche and Jota Aston next up, Jorg Bergmeister completes the top 6 in Pro but is behind the AM leading #61 AF Corse 430, Marco Cioci at the wheel.
LMP2 has Alex Premat leading after the problems for the #26 car followed by Charouz in the #49 car and Jonny Kane in Strakka's 42 HPD - Tom Kimber Smith is fourth.
At the head of the field it's Bernhard from Treluyer - then a gap to Montagny, Wurz, Bourdais and Lapierre. Fernandez reports that the #009 problem was "something in the engine, a belt or something - It's been a frustrating week, that was my 8th lap of the week." 16:33 - The remains of the #3 Audi are craned onto a recovery truck as repairs continue on the armco and tyre barrier.
Kim Palmer from AMR explains that both AMR Ones suffered exactly the same failure, the cars had both been found with cracks in an aluminium component in the alternator assembly in practice - the team fabricated a replacement component in steel but that simply moved the problem elsewhere in the system - #007 is being attended to but will be back out as soon as possible. McNish has been taken to hospital for some further checks but is believed to be OK. The #8 Peugeot gets a longer than usual stop, looking we believe at a brake balance issue. The earlier slow running for the Kronos Lola Aston was for an electrical glitch - the team believe they have now fixed it. The Signatech Oreca's puncture also damaged the car's rear bodywork.
Kimber Smith sits in second in class as the Safety Car is about to pit. Despite the fact we were told the Safety Car would be in on this lap - the lead Audi RS5 (of three) stays out. The whole hour has been run under caution. |
