It seems that the #24 might have again been pinged for speeding in pitlane as he took the penalty! Toyota pit with a 1:33 advantage over the chasing #1 Audi - Wurz climbs aboard - Whatever happens now this has been an extraordinary performance from the team. Wurz rejoins still 20 seconds ahead of #1.
di Grassi meanwhile is still third, still 16 seconds back on the #1 car. Nicolet pits for his second penalty and is followed down pitlane by Sarrazin for a less taxing stop - That's going to gift Pecom second in class - Nicolet though has made not the penalty stop but a routine service stop - Pla climbs aboard but will need to take a 2 minute stop go for his team bosses second pitlane speeding offence! That will open up the possibility of a podium for Greaves Motorsport! In other Oak news the retirement of the #35 car was due to a broken fuel pump. Lucas di Grassi sets the fastest lap of the race on lap 213 - 1:23.020 - he moves to unlap himself from his team mate as Lotterer pits on lap 216 - he stays aboard and now has a Brazilian moving in for a close shave- 17 seconds back. The #70 Larbre Vette gets a 30 second stop-go (speeding in pitlane) Lotterer responds - fending off his team-mate probably not the way he wanted his day to go! Pla keeps third place in LMP2 after his penalty - Julian 20 seconds back.
di Grassi pushing hard - he closes to 12 seconds back but a bad lap in traffic undoes the progress made. 30 minutes left. Charouz passes Liuzzi for 5th in LMP2 - Liuzzi though hasn't given this up - and Panciatici is closing too - Liuzzi drags by the ADR Delta man again through Turn One. Jonny Kane is chasing hard to catch Harold Primat for 5th - the gap coming down lap by lap - And this could be very important in keeping the Championship alive - Kane though is running out of time - 13 minutes left and 14 seconds the gap to prevent a Rebellion 1-2. Mucke pits for a splash of fuel - He'll retain second place after another great run for the Aston - The fuel consumption though was always the weak point of that attack. Kane is storming along, 9 minutes and under 8 seconds the gap - This might make the diufference between a 44 or a 47 point gap with 3 races to go. The JWA Avila Porsche is briefly stranded in pitlane

Wurz pits for his splash and dash - He's away, untroubled and comfortably ahead - Job almost done! 2.7 the gap - #13 - #21 3 minutes remaining - and in traffic Kane grabs it with a fabulous pass into turn one - Excellent stuff - up to fifth overall and critically second in LMP1 privateers. 90 seconds remain and an historic result looms - A simply fantastic effort from the Toyota Racing team who will take the win by more than a minute - Wurz starts the last lap - deals as proficiently with traffic as he has all afternoon and takes the flag - a dominant result - Lotterer 1:00.778 back in second with di Grassi a further 14 seconds bck to complete the podium.
Rebellion win in LMP1 privateers again withn the #12 Lola Toyota, Strakka claiming a last gasp second place courtesy of a fantastic last stint from Jonny Kane. Starworks simply dominated LMP2 - coming home 3 laps clear of Pecom Racing with Olivier Pla salvaging third for Oak Racing.
AF Corse move a huge step forward to securing the GTE Pro title whilst Aston Martin Racing edge away from Felbermayr Proton in the battle for second.
Larbre repair some of the damage from their dsq at Silverstone with the only untroubled run in GTE Am - Felbermayr Proton come home second with the second vette completing the final podium of the day.
A good race - a memorable result - and a great launching point for continued close competiton for the remainder of the season. |
