Le Mans 24 Hours - Hours 23 and 24 - To The Finish Duval took over with two hours to go. Kristensen swaps to Capello with 1:47 to go. So both will need to stop again, then have a splash to the finish. 3:19.732 for Duval, fastest lap for the Oreca car all race and fastest final sector of the race. Despite the fragility of the other Peugeots, it's all out for the podium. 32.7 seconds the gap to Kristensen. Next lap the gap is 26 seconds. #1 is a confirmed retirement. #42 is up to seventh overall, the Radical 20th overall! 23.9 seconds... One hour 34 to go and the Aston Martin, second in GT1 is slow on track. Policand is only 2:30 behind, on an outlap, so could be up to second by the end of the lap. 18.8 the gap - 3:19.074 for Duval with the fastest final sector of the race again, faster than qualifying and fastest lap of the weekend. Yet more proof that Peugeot's race has been a carefully measured affair from the start. Nygaard is in the pits. It appears that any rapidly diminishing prospects of Enge securing a final GT1 title to add to his resume are gone. Policand comes through to take second in class. Young Driver's hopes now will be to make the finish and claim third, and last, in class. 16.1, then 11.5. Duval can see Capello on the straights now as they pick their way through traffic. Eight seconds. Chalandon is just 30 seconds behind Hein - Bruichladdich chasing the second Oak car (and therefore fourth place) but not really making much ground. Duval enters the pits for his last full stop. He will need a splash. 78 minutes to go, his last stint was 42 minutes. Despite entering the pits Duval has lost only two seconds to Capello. Lotterer pits for a handover to Treluyer. Capello is trying to make the most of Duval being on cold tyres, over the kerbs with a 3:22. No need, the Oreca Peugeot lets go in exactly the same fashion as Montagny's, sheets of flame at Indianapolis; and de Chaunac, chatting with Quesnel at the time, puts his heads into his hands. He is not as emotional and is soon talking to the cameras. His body language suggests they were expecting what happened, though naturally hoping it did not. All Audi need to do now is bring the cars home for an incredible 1, 2, 3 finish. Audi have broken Peugeot. Literally. Coming up to an hour to go now and we have had more than 24 hours worth of racing; but the final hour might, just might, be a bit quieter now. Watts makes what is likely to be Strakka's last stop, from sixth overall! The GT2 leader is 12th overall. The 009 Lola Aston Martin is set for the team's second consecutive fourth place finish. Hour 23 review To the finish it’s Bernhard in the lead Audi, a full lap ahead of the R15 Plus of Andre Lotterer. He in turn is two laps clear of Dindo Capello (No. 7 Audi). Then comes Peugeot’s last hope for stopping an Audi sweep. It’s in the form of the No. 4 Oreca entry of Loic Duval. The two contenders will likely need one full stop and one splash. Behind them the No. 15 Kolles Audi has retired while Enge has a puncture in the second in GT1 Aston Martin. Lotterer does switch to Treluyer on what should be the untouchable second place Audi’s penultimate stop. Now it’s Duval’s turn. He calls for fuel only. Coming around on the opening lap . . .you know the rest. In a whoosh at Indianapolis we have another 908 turned into a barbecue grill. Hugues de Chaunac is in tears. Simply a weird yet wonderful race - yep, there’s another hour to go, but I don’t even want to think about it. Haven’t we seen everything already? Nope - we haven’t. Aston Martin is now competing with Peugeot for the barbecue market. Janos Wimpffen
FINAL HOUR We spoke too soon. 54 minutes to go and Hancock's AMR engine puffs a few times and then bang, it has gone at Mulsanne corner. Could this be some solace for Oreca, whose own AIM powered car is now top petrol P1 and should finish fourth. Should. Doesn't mean it will in this race. Paul Truswell believes that the race will also break the distance record as, with 35 minutes remaining, the R15s form up on track. The drama just keeps coming - the second AMR Lola Aston Martin, the #007 car, Stefan Mucke at the wheel is cruising round with a flat right rear Michelin! It should get back though and its sixth place overall looks safe. It is - it gets back and the tyre is changed with no further drama. The #52 Aston is back out on track with 22 minutes remaining 28 runners will take the flag, though the Drayson Racing Lola Judd very sadly won't make the 70% minimum distance. The Spyker though looks like it will just squeak in. Olivier Quesnel goes down to Audi to applaud the effort of the returning Champions We're into record distance territory - 395 laps completed and five minutes remaining. It ends with 397 laps - a quite astonishing event and a quite astonishing race. Audi were never the fastest but they drew Peugeot into the fight - and the four rings lassoed the Lions.
